While working as a referral surgeon in the the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area, Dr. Nichole Danova realized the area’s need for a surgical referral service. In December 2009 she and a small staff formed Veterinary Surgical Center (VSC). Its mission was to provide the area’s pets a dedicated veterinary surgical service.
VSC quickly became a successful referral service, thanks to the support of the community’s veterinary referral network. Sensing an opportunity, Danova decided to plan for a larger hospital with multiple offerings. Veterinary Referral & Emergency Center (VREC) was formed and a location secured in South Abington Township, PA. The 24/7/365 referral and emergency center opened its doors to the public in May 2010.
VREC is proud to provide distinctive and comprehensive veterinary services to the region’s pets. Currently, VREC offers 24/7 emergency and critical care services, along with surgery, internal medicine, cardiology, and physical rehabilitation departments. VREC also has an on-site MRI, the only in the region.
The facility is one of the largest and most inclusive veterinary facilities in Northeast PA, and is the only facility of its kind located in Lackawanna County. In the past 10 years, over 60,000 unique pets have been seen and treated. To accommodate the caseload, staff has expanded to over 50 talented individuals who focus on surpassing needs of patients, clients, and referring veterinary community.
