Sir Punkinhead (aka Punk) was seen at VREC for head shaking and chronic ear infections. Punk’s primary care veterinarian diagnosed him with an otic polyp; an ear polyp consisting of fibrous tissue and inflammatory cells. These polyps rarely go away on their own, causing ear infections over and over again.
Punk’s family scheduled a surgery consultation and was also seen by our Internal Medicine department during his visit. An anesthetized oropharyngeal scope procedure was done to evaluate his ears and to confirm the previous diagnosis. While the procedure is minimally invasive, it required sedation and medications that were outside of Punk’s family’s budget. Fortunately, he qualified for the Angel Fund and was able to have the procedure done immediately. During the scope, polypoid tissue was removed from Punk’s ear canal. Since Punk’s surgery, his owners report that he has not been shaking his head nor has he has not had any ear infections!
