Toby presented to his primary care veterinarian for a comminuted fracture, cause unknown. A comminuted fracture means a bone breaks or splinters into more than two fragments. Since considerable force and energy is required to fragment bone, fractures of this degree occur after high-impact trauma and require surgery. Because of the severity of the injury, Toby’s vet referred him to our surgery department immediately.
Once Toby qualified for the Angel Fund, our surgery department went to work. The fracture was so severe that an amputation was required. Toby did great during and after surgery and spent some time in the care of our Surgery and Critical Care departments before he was sent home with his very appreciative family.
